10 BEST DESSERTS YOU MUST TRY IN THE PHILIPPINES

Every time I think of sweets, Leche Flan always appears in my mind. Obviously, it is my favorite. I also grew up enjoying my grandma’s creation, which I think is the best Leche Flan recipe ever. What is your favorite?

During my travels, I make sure to sample famous desserts that each country has to offer. Some were good, while others need an acquired taste. At the end of the day, there is a part of me that still longs for Philippine sweets. Maybe I am just accustomed with our own food, or maybe there is really something extra ordinary about our desserts — I think both; sweets from the Philippines are really awesome.

If I will ask you to name at least ten of your favorite Pinoy sweets, what will they be? If in case you are curious, here are mine.

Leche Flan- Leche Flan is a dessert made-up of eggs and milk with a soft caramel on top. It resembles crème caramel and caramel custard. This delicious dessert is known throughout the world.It has been a regular item in the menu of most restaurants because of its taste, ease in preparation and long shelf life. It can also be added as a component to build other great tasting dessert creations

Maja blanca- Maja blanca is a Filipino dessert made primarily from coconut milk. Also known as coconut pudding, it is usually served during fiestas and during the holidays, especially Christmas.

Yema- Yema is a sweet custard confectionary from the Philippines. It is made with egg yolks, milk, and sugar. The name yema is from Spanish for “egg yolk”. Like other egg yolk-based Filipino desserts, it is believed that yema originated from early Spanish construction materials.

Ube halaya- Ube jam, ube halaya or halayang ube is a Philippine dessert made from boiled and mashed purple yam. Ube halaya is also used in pastries and other desserts such as halu-halo and ice cream

Polvoron- A polvorón is a type of heavy, soft, and very crumbly Spanish shortbread made of flour, sugar, milk, and nuts. They are mostly produced in Andalusia, where there are about 70 factories that are part of a syndicate that produces polvorones and mantecados

Pastillas- Pastillas, also known as Pastillas de Leche or Pastiyema is a milk-based confectionery with origins in the town of San Miguel in Bulacan, Philippines. From San Miguel, pastillas-making spread to other Philippine regions such as the provinces of Cagayan and Masbate

Cassava cake- Cassava cake is a traditional Filipino moist cake made from grated cassava, coconut milk, and condensed milk with a custard layer on top. It is a very popular dish in the Philippines, where It is commonly eaten for merienda. It is also served during gatherings and special occasions.

Biko- Biko is a sweet rice cake from the Philippines. It is made of coconut milk, brown sugar, and glutinous rice. It is usually topped with latik. It is a type of kalamay dish and is prepared similarly, except the rice grains are not ground into a paste. They are also sometimes packaged and sold as suman.

Buko Pandan- Buko pandan salad is a dessert consisting of pandan flavored gelatin and shredded young coconut mixed with cream and sweetened milk.
